Are House Warming Parties Still a Thing?

Well let’s get something out of the way and address the pink elephant in the room. Are house warming parties even a thing anymore? Let’s say it together.

YES!

They might not always look like what you’d see on TV or imagine. It can be essentially anything you want. As long as you are getting support and surrounded by the people in your life that you can’t live without. If fancy cocktails, black dresses, and semi formal attire aren’t your thing, that’s okay!

Make sure that whatever you do for your house warming party idea, it’s one that is true to you. No need to pretend and do something for the party theme that just isn’t you!

Who Plans House Warming Parties?

It’s a totally honest question. Maybe not as straight forward as who plans a bridal shower, right?

Some new homeowners like to take the reigns and plan and execute everything themselves. If you decide to plan the celebration yourself, then you definitely will have a pretty good chance that the party itself will be what you like and need.

Others like to delegate the party planning duties to someone else, such as a close family member or friend. Asking a parent, adult child, or BFF might take some of the burden off of you.

I mean, you just bought a house for crying out loud!

Whichever you decide to do, think about what you might need for a housewarming party. Do you need to plan it yourself and have fun with it OR do you need to just show up and not worry about which napkins to pick out?

If you end up being a guest or the designated party planner for someone, you might want to consider some good house warming party gift ideas.

What Are House Warming Parties For?

We have seen these so called new house celebrations, but what are they really for?

If you’re not really sure, that’s alright! A housewarming party is usually for someone who has newly purchased a home and wants to celebrate with their family and friends on their newest investment. If it’s your first home especially, you may need certain things for that new home that your guests can bring as gifts.

Even if it’s not your first purchase, it’s still fun to do something together with your loved ones.

I mean, any reason to jump on a party is a good reason!

Party Theme Ideas

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with having a simple low key get together with some mingling. But if you want to do a theme for your party, here are several ideas that you can run with for house warming party themes:

Game Night

The good ‘ol game night fallback is always a great easy way to connect with your family and friends at a party. Just make sure to remember who your audience is before choosing games. For instance, you might not want to pick shoots and ladders for a housewarming for adults, no matter how nostalgic it makes you feel.

Kind of a silly example, but you get the point.

Host a Silent Auction to Pay for New Home Expenses

Buying a new home isn’t cheap.

It’s honestly one of the largest purchases you’ll ever make in your lifetime. Whether this house buying thing isn’t your first rodeo or you’re brand new, how does it always turn out that it takes more moolah than you originally thought?

There is a way to combat those hefty expenses when you’re just starting out with a new home. It’s that you can have a house warming party and then host a silent auction. In most cases you have things you’ve accumulated over the years that are worth something and can be a big hit at an auction of sorts.

Paint Art Together to Showcase in Your Homes

Okay let’s admit, this sounds like a blast. Especially if you’re artsy.

Even if you’re not the next Van Gogh, invite some friends over and try it out. Chances are you want to get some fresh decor for your new home and making some special home decor pieces with family and friends is the ticket.

Decor Swap with friends

While we’re on the topic of home decor and friends, have you ever heard of a decor swap that you can do with friends or family? It’s cheap and you can really snag some great pieces AND give someone else something they might have been looking for all along.

Craft Night

Craft night is an option if you want to hang out with friends and have something creative and fun to do while catching up.

If you need a few fun craft ideas, these darling little gnomes are so cute and easy to do!

Because, let’s be honest, you NEED a little gnome in your life…

Cooking Class to Learn New Recipes

Something I’ve been wanting to get into more lately is making bulk meals. It’s definitely more work than just making a one and done meal for that day, but oh boy! Does it feel great to plan ahead and have your meals all set for the entire week.

Why do I bring this up?

If you need some more time, want to plan ahead, AND spend time with family and friends, why not do some bulk meal prep together?

One idea would be for everyone to bring a different ingredient(s) and bring them together to make different recipes for everyone to share.

Spring-Time Gals Brunch

Having a fun spring gals brunch is one of those super duper fun house warming party ideas. There are so many things about it that are cute in my book.

It’s great to have some of your favorite ladies over to this housewarming party and chat and catch up while you drink mimosas.

Another cute thing to do when you use this idea is setting the table all festive for the season you’re currently in.

Let your creativity flow!

Some other house warming ideas could include:

  • Wine tasting
  • Summer bonfire and s’mores
  • Pool party
  • BBQ
  • Christmas cookie decorating
  • Fall-time football get together
  • Garden Party

Another cool thing about having a house warming party, is that you can make a house warming registry.

It might feel cheesy to some, but if you haven’t benefitted from having a wedding registry or something similar and you need things, absolutely put some necessities on a registry. And maybe some fun things too because, why not?

Well, okay, maybe not a hot tub. I know, I’m disappointed too.
