10 Ways to Transform Your House Into a Home You Love

It’s so hard to go on Pinterest and see these stunning, perfectly cleaned homes being showcased sometimes. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great to use Pinterest for inspiration. But let’s be real, does it ever make you feel like your home falls short? Or even, makes you feel that YOU fall short?

Ouch. Been there done that.

#1: Maintaining a Clean Home

I put this one first because it really does make a home look so much better. Even the design of the home looks worlds nicer when you give the room even a quicker cleanup. It lets the good parts shine through every time.

If you don’t have the means to do some DIY or design anything else at this time, just do a tidy up and watch how much nicer the space as a whole looks. This is something good to remind yourself like I do when I just don’t have the mental strength to clean up that day. I’ve noticed cleaning an area well and then stepping back and really looking, it gives me a sense of joy and pride in what I’ve done.

It’s so easy to look at our homes through the lens of the messes and be discouraged about what we have. But giving your home a chance by cleaning up and then seeing it as it is without the mess, does wonders! It’s definitely not easy some days, but a really simple way to love the home you have right now, is to give your home a chance to be seen as it is.

Having a quick tidy up or cleaning schedule is a great way to keep up on everything in the home. It easily gets so overwhelming so seeing the tasks on paper and divided out on different days in a simple system helps tremendously!

#2: Decluttering Everyday Items

When decluttering became more serious for me in my home, I kid you not, my life and home changed big time! But, come on, you hear about decluttering all the time right?

But is it worth the work?

Is it worth getting rid of ‘hard to let go of’ things?

The simple answer is a resounding “YES”!

Before, I always thought the more stuff, the more beautiful. Mostly because magazines show very maximal spaces as beautiful.

Which, they totally can be!

But… so can minimal homes with fewer things as well.

I enrolled in The Uncluttered Project‘s “Clutter- Free Living” course they offer. The encouragement and drive to have a better life away from clutter was definitely appealing and ultimately is changing my home as we speak.

Whether it be physical items or things that live rent-free in your mind that need the boot, they’ve got the tools for you.

Being able to declutter your home will help you love it more since you have less stuff and aren’t overwhelmed 24/7 anymore.

#3: Fresh Coat of Paint

Of course, we know paint can do wonders, but sometimes we can forget that all our home might need to really sparkle in our eyes is some fresh and new colors.

You don’t even have to paint all the things in order to see and feel a difference.

Buffet Makeover

Back in 2023 I decided to redo my cute buffet.

It was teal with some French decals which stayed that way for awhile. But after some time I thought it was time for a fresh coat of paint.

Breakfast Nook

If you’ve seen me talk about doing my kitchen nook makeover you might have seen these photos already. But if not, this room used to be pretty beat up and in need of some paint big time.

As you can see the difference going from the before to the after makes.

Doing a makeover in this little space really made me smile whenever I walked by after it was done, and it was mostly just paint!

#4: Finding Your Decorating Style as a Guide

If you have the slightest feeling that you might not know your own personal decorating style, I’d recommend hopping over to my post where I talk all about finding your own personal decorating style.

Everyone has a different style and it’s helpful to know what that is somewhat.

Back when my husband and I were in our very first apartment back in 2011, I had no clue what my decorating style was, how to be cohesive with it, or what to do with my new home.

You can use your personal style as a good guide when you don’t know where to start. You can punch in that certain style into Pinterest and gather inspiration with that particular style.

It really does help to know what you like in your own home, when you do find what you love and decorate and design in that way, your true self will shine through your home which helps you love it even more.

#5: DIY The House of Your Dreams

Raise your hand if you love DIY!

DIY allows you to make something spectacular, create the look you want and pay a fraction of the cost it would take to hire it out or buy (usually) and have fun.

It’s doable to create furniture, decor, even lighting without a lot of money. The sheer volume of ideas that are out there for home DIYs is staggering.

Don’t be afraid to learn some new skills to create some things that would really make you smile just because it’s a part of your home. To help you gather some inspiration here are some of the DIY home improvement projects I’ve done that made a difference in how much I adore my home.

#6: Be Cohesive Throughout the Home

It can be hard to see your homes full potential if you think something is “off”.

Usually if things look mismatched or “thrown together without rhyme or reason”, your home lacks cohesion.

As I talk about having a cohesive design in the home in my previous post, here’s some things NOT to do that I mention:

1. Don’t go decorating willy-nilly without first making a plan.

2. Don’t keep changing things just because a trend changes.

3. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Even small changes to your space can go a long way when you’re decorating cohesively. The style of our homes doesn’t matter as much as are you taking that style, and making it coordinate well?

That’s what makes the biggest difference!

I’ve compiled some of my favorite secrets and practical tips that I’ve used in my own home inside my course, “Coordinate Your Home: Achieving the Flow”.

This course will help you tremendously if you are feeling your home lacking in cohesiveness. And when you do find the secret sauce to being cohesive, that home you have tends to sure look a lot more put together.

#7: Always Be Learning

I urge you to always be learning. Learn more about taking care of the home you have, designing it, and learn more about what you love to look at.

#8: Embrace the Heart of Joyful Living

It’s super easy to be sucked into Instagram and Pinterest and start feeling fickle dissatisfaction with your home.

I mean, we only see the perfect highlights of people’s houses on those platforms where the mess is cleaned up and everything is in its place.

Not to mention that particular room or space is frozen in time, who knows what it looks like in 20 minutes?

Ahem, I might be talking about my home here too.

I’m guilty of this but please don’t compare.

Your home is as unique as you are. You put hours into it and added special items that mean something to only you.

If your home is looked at like it should be, (speaking to myself here too) then we’d realize what a blessing it is from God.

The fact that you and I are even able to fill our spaces with our favorite things, fresh flowers, or those little moments in photos is priceless. Not everyone is able to call a place home.

So let’s embrace our homes with gratitude, exact how they are, a blessing.

#9: Shop Your Own Home

Some easy ideas to not only decorate your home for free, but to avoid buying more, is to shop your home.

What I mean is, do you have decor in another room that you could switch to a different area?

Do you have some small items you could find to make a cute vignette?

This might be the right thing for you if you’re on a budget or want to use what you have.

You can think outside the box and take decor from one room and move it to different places around the house for a new look.

If you’re like me, I love looking through some boxes of decor that I’ve rotated out a couple months ago and switch them with what’s currently out now. If you find that you have a bit too much decor to use right now but you want to keep it, grab some totes from the store and put things you aren’t using now away for the time being. Then, in a few months or so when you feel you need something different, whip those bad boys out and switch out your decor.

Bam! It looks like a brand new room!

You’ll surprised by how different your spaces look just by rotating out some things with what you already have.

A little change can go a long way!

#10: Be Grateful for the “Quirks”

When I first bought my current home, there were definitely some things that made me go, “That’s interesting!” or “What’s that originally for?”

I think the most beautiful homes have some quirks in them. Some interesting things I’ve seen in some homes are quirks that showed history, even if they might look a little…err… weird. What kinds of personal stories could they tell?

You should look at those quirks in your home as something unique and full of character. I know others have taken some of their home’s quirks and created something beautiful from them in unexpected ways.

Our morning routine and life journey are done in that house and you’ve made memories there. You eat your meals with your family at the dining room table in that home. You do real life in that home.

That’s something to be grateful for.
