Wow, I can’t believe it but Christmas and new years are officially over and now it feels like we are back to normal routines. With the holiday season gone, are you team “bummed that the holidays are over” or team “ready to move things along to the new year already”?

No matter what team you find yourself in this year, we all have sometimes found ourselves thinking, “I’m ready to refresh my home” in one way or another.

If this is you, here are some great ideas on how to work with a clean slate in your home and maybe that “my house is empty” feeling we all sometimes get.

But first, let’s make sure we gather up all of our holiday decor and store it well for next year!

Christmas Storage Solutions

Before we can get that clean slate look, we need to put all of our holiday decor away in good storage containers. If you feel stuck in that department or need better ways to store everything, here are some suggestions.

Wreath Storage

Crunching your beautiful Christmas wreaths in a garbage bag or stuffing them in totes?

No longer!

A Christmas wreath storage bag is the way to go.

Ornament Storage

Same goes with your ornaments. Sometimes we might have some priceless ornaments that were passed down or made for you. We don’t want those to break.

Check out this ornament storage option:

Tree Storage

Christmas trees can be a tricky shape to store correctly. You can’t go wrong with a tree storage bag with handles.

Other Holiday Decor

Since we’re storing our tree and wreaths the right way why not the rest of our Christmas decor too?

Here are some really great options to check out so that you never store things the wrong way and always know where things are.

I don’t know about you, but I feel so much better when everything has a place.

Now that the Christmas decor is put away, time to give your home a refresh by cleaning and decluttering your home, so that you have a fresh slate to work with.

Clean and Declutter

The easiest way for that fresh start is to do a little cleaning and decluttering of the space before adding anymore decor to it.

I’ll speak for myself when I say it’s so easy to skip this step. I want to start decorating something new already darn it!

You don’t have to over haul your entire house in other to do this. Even a simple clean up and even taking out a garbage bag for things to donate is a huge deal!

Pro Tip: Making a cleaning schedule is a great way to keep on task, I highly recommend it. Especially if you’re like me and have trouble focusing on one thing at a time.

Also, if you find some Christmas decorations for instance that you NEVER use year after year, toss those puppies in the donate bag!

Easy Peasy. Same goes for year-round decor that’s out currently.

When talking about this I have to mention Cassandra from ClutterBug. I love watching her cleaning and decluttering videos on YouTube. It’s very motivating even to watch someone else do the thing before you have to actually do it yourself.

The same can go for cleaning your house.

Make A New Layout

Once you have that clean space to work with and we are all tidy and things are put away, now it’s time for the fun part.

A completely free and easy way to get a whole new look in your home is to rearrange your room layout.

I talk more about rearranging and restyling in another post as well.

You’re working with the same decor and furniture with no need for new furniture.

If you’ve ever rearranged a room before, you know why this is my favorite way to add a fresh look to my space. It completely transforms the whole room in a very inexpensive way.

It doesn’t even have to be a huge change if you don’t want it to be. Moving around your floor lamps, side table, or any piece of furniture and give it a new home in the room does wonders.

This is a free way to decorate and makes your room feel new. It’s one of my favorite ways to decorate for free which if you want more ideas on, you can read more here.

Change Light Fixtures

Another way to refresh my home that I love is to change out a light fixture. In some cases the previous owner of your home may have left you a really groovy overhead light that just isn’t your style.

I’ve talked about redoing my stairwell and swapping out my groovy light for something better on my Facebook group, Home Decor, Styling and DIY. (Join my group and get lot of ideas while watching me refresh my home.)

I’ve also talked about one of my favorite places to get lights that I actually used in that stairwell!

Swap that baby out for a new light that is your own personal style. It makes such a big difference!

Bonus points if the new light fixture adds lots of great visual interest to your area.

Pro Tip: If you need help finding your own personal style of decorating, I’ve written in depth about finding your own in another post.

Add Fresh Paint

Don’t underestimate the power of a new coat of paint. It’s powerful I tell ya.

Here’s a fun project I did on my living room buffet just by adding fresh paint:

AFTER

If you are able to paint your space or furniture you have a perfect opportunity to change the entire “room feel”. A fresh coat of paint can take a drab boring room into something amazing and is one of the most simple ways to refresh your home.

When you decide to paint a room, the possibilities are endless. You really can make your space look entirely like a new area with paint.

Make a Statement

Making a statement of sorts in your space is a great way to change things up. I love using accent walls to refresh my own home personally. This is one of my favorite things to do when my space needs an elevated look and is an effective and simple way to changes things up.

refresh my home with an accent wall

If you need some ideas for accent walls and want to see what’s out there, I’ve written all about them!

It doesn’t have to be anything “out there” or “extravagant” if you don’t want it to be. You can just find a small wall space that could use some peel and stick wallpaper or beautiful wood pieces for instance.

I give you the full scoop when it comes to accent walls in general as well on another post so you get plenty of new ways and ideas for a statement wall.

If adding an accent wall with wall paper or paint, another great statement piece that makes a huge difference is a gallery wall.

Adding some cute statement accent furniture pieces can be another effective way to make a statement in your space.

Things such as using a new coffee table in your living room that “pops out” a bit with it’s style or wood tones can make your space feel like it has new life!

In the same way, adding new area rugs or an accent chair or two that compliment your old furniture can be all you need. Also without completely changing your entire dining room, living room or whole house and breaking the bank.

Beautiful living room with two checkered wingback chairs and a soft ambiance

Sometimes that’s just not an option at the moment to buy everything new and that’s okay!

If you have a fireplace mantel, which is a statement piece on it’s own, it a great way to refresh the space. By taking everything off, wiping it down and and starting new, you are refreshing your space on little time.

Swap Out Old Window Treatments

One way to welcome the new year and refresh my home is to switch out old window treatments.

Swapping out those tired curtains or blinds for something new can totally make your home feel refreshed.

Think about adding some flowy, light curtains to let that sunshine in or opt for bright colors in drapes to shake things up. Playing with a new fabric and pattern can totally switch up the room’s vibe, making it feel super cozy or more sophisticated .

A little while ago, I decide that my living room was a bit too monochromatic for me and I decided to add some color to the space.

To do that, I started by updating my curtains in that room:

So, by sprucing up those window treatments, you’ll give your place a cool new look that totally matches the vibes of the fresh year ahead! Just make sure to take your whole house’s color scheme when picking out new window treatments you want to refresh your home all while making it look cohesive.

Update Textiles and Linens

You can most certainly use small accessories such as a decorative tray on your coffee table or end tables for a different way to refresh things a bit. Using smaller items to uplift your room can really turn a whole room around if you can’t get big new pieces or if you don’t have much time.

Even updating your throw pillows in your living room will make your space feel like it’s come a long way!

Here are some other smaller textiles that you can swap out to get that fresh new look:

-Throw blankets

– New pillows or just pillow covers

-Table cloths

-Table runners

-Couch covers

-New bedding

-New rugs

-Curtains and drapes

-…Even smaller things like upgrading your kitchen utensils!

One thing I like to accomplish at the new year is to swap out all of my Christmas towels and bedding and replace them with my clean year round options.

It’s the little things in life, right?

Improve the Air Quality

Sometimes if you want to feel like your home is refreshed is to just get some of that good fresh air.

Open windows of course add to a room and make a space feel less stuffy. I know that’s my first thing I do when I’m spring cleaning for instance last year.

Adding things like fresh flowers or my favorite plants to a cleaned off dining table really does my heart good sometimes. Not only that but it helps the space feel freshened up and is a good cheap way to accomplish that. Take a stroll to your local nursery and chat with them about some good options for you.

Remember, you don’t need to break the bank to make your home feel refreshed this new year. Things as simple as getting some good quality air helps tremendously. No need to shell out that dough!

Conclusion

I hope these were helpful and give you some ideas that I use to refresh my home after the holidays.
