To start off, some may ask, “What exactly IS Interior Decoration?” It may be obvious for some, but let’s dig a little deeper to find out where it started and what the experts may say! Some of this may surprise you as it surprised me!

“Interior decorating is the art of decorating a residential home or commercial business according to a client’s personal preferences and style. It includes selecting color schemes, flooring materials, furniture, artwork, and accessories. It transforms an area into an aesthetically pleasing and budget-friendly design.”

Of course, there is a lot that goes into someone’s home and using their style to make it cohesive but beautiful to the homeowner. But more on that later, let’s look at the foundation of interior Decorating, shall we?

Where and When Did Decorating Your Home Become Popular?

Decorating your home these days is pretty common around the world, whether someone uses one style or another (we will touch on the styles in a bit). But some may not know, that back in the 1800s, only royalty used to decorate their homes. The lower class population with modest homes that were functional with little to no design involved, did not adopt this concept quite yet.

Remember the old movies showing royal kings and queens with their fancy castles all decked out? Well, soon that came to an end! Believe it or not, starting in the 19th century, the masses started decorating their homes as well. So whose idea was it to start this evergreen trend?

If you’ve ever heard of Elise De Wolfe, you may know that she was the first-ever “Interior Designer” in the late 1900s. The exact term wasn’t even used yet in those days, but some call her the Mother of interior decorating!

“Wolfe made a name for herself eschewing heavy, dark, Victorian interiors in favor of lighter, brighter schemes. In 1905, she was tapped to design the Colony Club, a social club for society women and a project that exposed her to many of New York’s well-heeled patrons.”

What is My Decorating Style and How to Describe It?

It’s hard to know at first when you ask yourself, “What is my decorating style?”. Sometimes it’s even hard to describe it to people! I understand the feeling friend! Don’t lose hope because there are some questions to ask yourself to point you on the right track:

“What colors am I drawn to?”– This is helpful to know what colors you like because then you can easily incorporate them into your home. Don’t exactly know? There are many out there to choose from! PRO TIP: Look in your closet, what colors are you likely to wear? Neutrals? Bold colors? Muted colors? This will help you decide what you may like in your home!
“What one piece in my home do I love?”– I call this trick according to my sweet mother, your inspiration piece! If you have one rug, one pillow, one pair of shoes, etc, you have your work cut out for you! Look at that one piece and notice the colors, pattern, and style it may have.
“What am I drawn to online?”– This is simple but sometimes overlooked, I would recommend going to the site, Pinterest (Find me right here), and browse hundreds of thousands of decor inspo. You may find you are loving a certain type of room.

Your home may be farmhouse! The color white in general has gone up in demand for lovers of this style in itself. If this is your personal look for your home, you can use old windows that are a bit chippy to decorate an area of your home. It adds some character and a bit of appeal to that space! Those that enjoy this style of home decor, tend to gravitate toward clean, crisp, lines and a simple color palette. Unnecessary clutter is a no-go and lots of natural materials are used. This gives a definite clean look to a home and doesn’t cause overwhelm to your eyes.

Better known as “Boho”, this style is rising in popularity in 2021. You may have seen this style using neutrals, browns, and earthy tones. This boho look uses a lot of natural elements such as baskets, greenery, jute, and so on. This gives off a more “laidback vibe” in the home and uses so many different mixtures of textures.

What Is My Decorating Style? Traditional?

Comfy, classic, and casual are king in this design. This was once the most used decorating theme out there but as other styles have come along, more and more homes are using a mix of styles. Reds, greens, and woods are commonly used here.

Now, before you come after me, I will say, there are PLENTY more design and decorating styles out there. The above styles are just a main guideline of the most commonly used themes in homes in 2021. But as previously stated, the are countless other styles as well.

Okay, so we looked at some main themes, before we dive into asking exactly what is my decorating style, let’s see what the most popular theme there is in 2021.

What is the Most Popular Decorating Style?

Since we all browse stores, whether we shop for decor or not, we can’t help but notice the new ever-changing trends. Some may stick to their own style they prefer throughout their lifetime, but others may want to keep up with the trends. Either way is totally okay! Give yourself permission to have fun and have your home be what you want it to be, rant over.

But if you are one to change it up and see what’s new for decorating styles, it’s fun to know what’s new and happening’ right?

According to thespruce.com, “When it comes to styling, Wayne says the go-to accessories in 2021 are all about natural elements. Stick to earthy tones, terracotta vases, marble coffee tables, wicker baskets, and wooden furniture pieces.”

As we talked about in the previous paragraph, using natural wood and wicker are rising in popularity. But currently, if you browse Instagram (Follow ME HERE), you will quickly see that farmhouse style is all the rage at the moment.

Of course, not everyone is doing the farmhouse theme for their home, but the majority of Instagram home accounts are currently showcasing their white shiplap, mason jar collection, and basket wall collages. What is My Personal Home Style?

So now that you’ve seen some of the different decorating styles, how do you choose a design style for you? Some may look at one and just KNOW that style is for them. But for the rest of us, how do we choose one?

As I mentioned before, looking at your wardrobe is a great indicator of what you decorating theme may be.

Take inventory of some decor that you already have that you LOVE, even if it’s only one piece. What about that decor piece draws you in? The color? The style? The pattern? The material? Take notice of some things you like about it and look at the design styles I mentioned. You may find that the decor piece you already have and love, is similar to a certain style that out there!

How Do I Create My Own Decorating Style?

So…I purposely left out a style..well sort of. Not seeing your style exactly? Still wondering, “What is my decorating style? I don’t see it, Rae!” Well, good news friend! Introducing…

ECLECTIC STYLE

This decorating theme or decorating style, is basically where you use a mixture of different styles per se, and tie them together into your own personal decor theme.

According to HGTV.com,

“What is eclectic decorating style? Eclectic style encompasses a variety of periods and styles and is brought together through the use of color, texture, shape, and finish. … Colors: The palette can vary, but it’s best to stick with a few neutrals to help tie all the elements together.”

Sound interesting huh? And maybe sounds like you?

I want to end on this note. It’s important to know, that you ABSOLUTELY CAN mix and match styles! You may find yourself loving two or more styles. So…put them together!

Some examples may be, Rustic-Farmhouse, Country-Shabby Chic, Modern-Farmhouse, or Modern-Glam!
